One of my favorite things about Valparaíso and what makes the city so unique is the street art! The city is full of murals and graffiti that line the walls of stores, homes, and hostels. Street art has been an important part of the city since the years of the dictatorship, where it was used as a silent protest. Today, it continues to give artists a form of political and social expression for all to see.

In Valparaíso, the local government supports and promotes street art through commissioning murals and holding graffiti contests. The best places to see street art are Cerros Concepción, Alegre and Bellavista, among others. You can explore Valparaíso’s street art through a free, organized tour, or just by wandering through the hills, which is how I like to spend my weekends!
