Some good advice…

The other morning, I woke up to an email from a close friend who is also studying abroad this semester. It came at the perfect time – I am suffocating amidst the million piles of clothes, shoes, books, toiletries (do I even need them?!) and am headed to Australia in a few days. Because of work, Boston snowstorms and other things, I haven’t thought much about heading across the world for five months. That’s why, when I received Morgan’s e-mail, I put down the shirt I was folding and got to thinking.

The best piece of advice she gave is while I am abroad I should “be present, be open, be aware, and always be thankful.” She focused her e-mail on letting go of judgment (especially when you’re uncomfortable in a new situation) and furthermore, letting go of technology. I think the latter has a lot to do with overcoming the pitfalls of my generation. Often times, we are too focused on uploading, texting, tweeting etc., to engage in conversation or simply see something we would normally miss. I think that the main themes of Morgan’s e-mail are ones I should live by while in Australia – no judgment and being present without my eyes glued to my cell phone and/or iPod.

Otherwise, what will I blog about?!
