I’m scared of a lot of things…heights, the dark, monsters under my bed, and perhaps most of all, embarrassing myself. Don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t stop me from embarrassing myself on a daily basis but it’s almost always unintentional. That is until last night. I’ve been struggling to find things to do on weekends besides hitting the town, which is definitely fun, but always ends up being pricey. I made a friend who is an international student from Australia, and she convinced me to come with her to an event on campus for international students. The event was a karaoke night. I haven’t had a good singing voice since choir in the second grade, so there was no chance anyone would convince me to get up there. But in the end I did, and here’s why: I didn’t know anybody there. What does it matter if you embarrass yourself a little? Plus, I’m pretty sure the whole point of karaoke is to be embarrassing, but the good part is that everyone gets embarrassed, not just you. So we all took turns getting up there and embarrassing ourselves and it ended up being pretty fun! However in a shocking turn of events, it turned out people were voting on who they thought was best, and yours truly came in second place! Whoever would have thought that my poor rendition of “Blank Space” by Taylor Swift would turn out to be such a hit? I sure didn’t. But I guess that’s something I’ve learned several times during this experience; if you put yourself out there, good things are bound to happen. Don’t be scared to embarrass yourself and try new things!
