One of the most rewarding parts of studying abroad in Edinburgh was how much the city itself became part of my learning experience. Edinburgh offers the perfect balance of history, nature, and everyday student life, making it easy to explore while still feeling grounded. Whether you’re looking for iconic landmarks or cozy spots to unwind, these are the places that truly shaped my experience abroad and are absolutely worth the hype.

Arthur’s Seat is one of the most iconic landmarks in Edinburgh and something every study abroad student should experience at least once. My friends and I planned to go on the first day of class at 5am but I overslept… another friend and I went later that week. No matter which path you choose, the hike is so rewarding. Along the way, you’ll see views that slowly open up to the city below. At the top, you get a gorgeous view of Edinburgh, the coastline, and the surrounding landscape. It is hands down the best view in the city. It’s perfect for sunrise, sunset, or anytime you need a reset.

Victoria Street is one of the most recognizable streets in Edinburgh. It’s known for its colorful buildings and curved design. The street is filled with so many unique shops, cafes, and amazing businesses. It was such a fun place to explore whether you’re shopping or just passing through. It’s also a great example of how historic architecture and modern life coexist in the city. Even after visiting multiple times, it never stopped feeling special, which is why it’s so loved by both locals and visitors. This also leads directly to the Vennel which is infamous from “One Day.” Both are stunning views & you’re able to meet people from all walks of life.

Portobello Beach is the perfect escape when you want a break from the city without going too far. From the student accommodations, it’s about a 45-minute walk, but my friends and I turned the journey into a 90-minute walk because part of the experience was stopping at local stores and taking our time. When you arrive, you’ll find a stunning view of the beach. We grabbed fish and chips to eat on the beach and followed it with ice cream, which made the day feel complete. There’s also a small arcade nearby that adds a fun, nostalgic touch. It’s a great spot for relaxing, reflecting, and enjoying a slower day.

The Royal Mile is the heart of Edinburgh, connecting Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace. Walking along it means being surrounded by centuries of history, from cobblestone streets to historic buildings and hidden gems branching off the main road. There’s always something happening like street performers, markets, and local shops which makes it feel lively no matter how many times you visit. Spending time here helped me feel more connected to the city and its culture, and it’s a place where every walk feels slightly different from the last.

Lannan Bakery is a must-visit, especially during busy academic weeks. I saw this on social media and was worried it would be an over hyped place to visit as it’s located near Circus Lane, one of the most picturesque streets in Edinburgh. The bakery itself is cozy and inviting, with pastries. My friends and I would come here when we needed a break from our work, and those moments of stepping away and being present became some of my favorite memories. It’s a reminder of how important it is to find balance while studying abroad. I would 100% recommend walking there so you can see everything!

Uplands Roast was one of my favorite hot chocolate spots in Edinburgh and quickly became a place I associated with comfort and routine. It’s not the kind of café where you can sit, but I loved catching up with friends in line while waiting for our drinks. Having a go-to spot like this made everyday life abroad feel more familiar and helped Edinburgh feel like home. Places like Uplands Roast show how small, consistent moments can be just as meaningful as big adventures.

Overall, Studying abroad with Arcadia Abroad gave me the opportunity to experience Edinburgh beyond the classroom and truly engage with the city around me. My advice to future students is to explore intentionally, but also allow yourself the freedom to wander and discover places at your own pace. These locations aren’t just things to check off a list but they’re places where memories are made, friendships grow, and your study abroad experience comes to life!
