We are thrilled to welcome so many new students to Scotland this term!  January is a very busy month with orientations, classes starting, society meetings and fresh social calendars, but we hope that you will have a chance to start taking advantage of some of the opportunities around your university that appear at every turn.  

To help you get acquainted with different venues, types of events and areas of exploration, we have compiled a few suggestions of different types of activities that are going on around Scotland.  Additionally, we will post monthly happenings on this page, so continue to watch this space!

Aberdeen

the gateway to the north: aberdeen harbour 1136-1660

Throughout january, aberdeen maritime museum

A really interesting museum, the Aberdeen Maritime Museum offers insight into some of Aberdeen's most important industries and aspects of the city's heritage.  This exhibition looks at the early history of the harbor, drawing on a range of important artifacts.

scot free tours: free walking tours

Throughout january, meet at mercat cross, 11am

Get to know the city of Aberdeen on foot with these free walking tours.

Scottish ballet: Hansel & Gretel

18-21 January, his Majesty's theatre, 2 and 7:30pm

Enjoy this winter tradition at one of Aberdeen's finest venues.

Edinburgh

monkey business

A somewhat unusual display, this exhibition allows you to explore the world of primates with over 60 taxidermy species.  Not one to miss!

burns night ceilidh

20 and 21 January, lauriston hall, 8pm

Celebrate one of Scotland's proudest holidays with a traditional ceilidh dance.

a history of Edinburgh's old town and its characters

Saturdays in January, meet outside the national museum of Scotland, 10:30am

Get to know Edinburgh better by strolling through the winding streets of its Old Town.

Glasgow

the Glasgow tattoo

19-21 January, THE sse hydro, 6:30pm

Soak up the bagpipes and drums at this military parade. Similar to the Edinburgh Tattoo, which takes place every year during the month of August, this event will showcase Scottish music and dancing.

celtic connections

19-31 January, various venues and times

Each year Celtic Connections hosts some of the best Scottish performers. With numerous shows on offer, this event is a great chance to hear and experience musical traditions from around Scotland.

alphonse mucha: in quest of beauty

throughout January, Kelvingrove art gallery & museum

Held in one of Glasgow's finest museums, this exhibition examines Mucha's work and his influence on art nouveau style in Glasgow and beyond.

St Andrews

fife food festival

Enjoy fresh, local produce and sample some of Scotland's best dishes!

southern tenant folk union

27 January, byre theatre, 8pm

Enjoy the music styling of this Edinburgh-based folk band from the comfort of this traditional St Andrews venue.

Laugh out loud comedy club

21 January, byre theatre, 8pm

See some of the nation's best comedians.

Stirling

Scotland's national hero

2 and 3 January, the national Wallace monument, 11am-3:30pm

Want to learn more about William Wallace?  Allow costumed actors regale you with his story at the striking Wallace Monument in Stirling.

Swan Lake

20 and 21 January, macrobert centre, 2:30 or 7:30pm

Take in a bit of culture and enjoy Ballet West perform one of Tchaikovsky's most famous ballets.

Pamela McMahon: mood, light and colour
