The only way to do it is to do it: Throughout September, Hunterian Museum & Art Gallery

A look at the work of Black Mountain College, the North Carolinian progressive liberal arts college that existed for only 24 years (1933–1957) but which was a hothouse of the avant-garde, with teachers such as Albert Einstein, John Cage, Charles Olson, Willem de Kooning and Buckminster Fuller, and alumni such as Robert Rauschenberg, Arthur Penn, Robert Creeley, James Leo Herlihy (author of Midnight Cowboy) and Cy Twombly. The exhibition is accompanied by a series of events and workshops.

Touch the Earth Lightly: Through 27 September, The Lighthouse

An exhibition and series of events inspired by the renowned Australian architect, Glenn Murcutt.

Lanark: A Life in Three Acts: 3-19 September, Citizens Theatre, 7pm

A new adaptation by David Greig of Alasdair Gray‘s seminal novel Lanark, directed by Graham Eatough.

The Ballet of the Palette: Throughout September, Gallery of Modern Art

Twentieth-century paintings from the gallery collection, selected by contemporary artists Neil Clements, Lotte Gertz, Charlie Hammond, Louise Hopkins, Merlin James, Victoria Morton, Carol Rhodes, Tony Swain, Hanneline Visnes and George Ziffo.

A Century of Style: Costume and Colour 1800-1899: Throughout September, Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum

A look at the glory and diversity of 19th century clothing, with examples from leading Glasgow department stores and dressmakers and a beaded couture dress from Paris. This was the period when industrial dyes and the sewing machine were invented and perfected, leading to an explosion in mass-produced garments.

Island: Eight Houses for the Isle of Harris: Throughout September, Lighthouse

The culmination of a series of discussions and events which invited architects to imagine a house for clients on the Isle of Harris. The exhibition is curated by AE Foundation.

Michael Wilkinson: Sorry Had to Done: Beginning 12 September, Modern Institute

New work from the Glasgow-based artist.

Ripples on the Pond: Through 30 September, Modern Art Gallery

A selection from the gallery's collection curated by Katie Bruce, designed as a conversation between works on paper by women and the moving image.

The biggest name in Scottish stand-up continues his reign with another show packed with astute observations and deathly funny gags.

Elsa Canasta and Motion of Displacement: 24-26 September, Theatre Royal, 7:30pm

A ballet double bill. Elsa Canasta is choreographer Javier de Frutos' Scottish Ballet premiere, set to Cole Porter's music. Motion of Displacement, choreographed by Bryan Arias, is a world premiere of incredible dance set to music by Bach and John Adams.

Trevor Noah: Lost in Translation: 28 September, King's Theatre, 8pm

Sharp wit and intelligent commentary from the South African comic.
