With classes starting this month, there is always excitement and energy on campus this time of year.  Freshers' week, student societies and student halls all offer activities for you to participate in, but there are also a wealth of concerts, exhibitions, talks and other fun events organised by various departments that happen across Scottish campuses throughout the year. 

We've found a few events that might be of interest this month, but keep an eye out for other things going on throughout the year.  You never know what you might learn or who you might meet!

Aberdeen

an audience with Charles dickens-writer, performer, celebrity

through 11 September, sir Duncan rice library

An exciting and rare opportunity to see fifteen of Dickens' original works, An Audience with Charles Dickens explores not only the author's role as a writer, but also as a performed. This exhibition is a must-see for literature fans!

Gifford lecture series with professor mona siddiqui

20-29 September, kings conference centre

The Gifford Series offers five lectures which, this year, address the themes of human struggle, suffering and hope. Interdisciplinary in nature, this event offers a range of insights into topics across the humanities.

Edinburgh

alice neel: the subject and me

Throughout September, Talbot rice gallery

This major exhibition featuring the work of Alice Neel, one of the most important female artists of the 20th century, presents an interesting examination of the psychological elements of Neel's work. It is the first solo exhibition of Neel's work in Scotland and promises to present new perspectives.

british logic colloquium 2016

6-8 September, informatics forum

Raising questions of mathematical and philosophical logic, the BLC offers the chance to hear a variety of talks addressing topics ranging from the application of logic in computer science to proof theory.  Since the Enlightenment, the University of Edinburgh has offered a forum for philosophical enquiry, and events of this nature continue the tradition!

Glasgow

munro challenge 2016

24-26 September

The Munro Challenge is an event organised by the University of Glasgow to raise money and awareness for cancer.  Hiking in teams, the goal is to have Glasgow University representatives on top of as many munros as possible over the weekend.  For an active and fun weekend, check this out!

the jazz legacy of Charles mingus

24 September, RCS, 100 Renfrew street

Featuring the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra with Arild Anderson, this concert celebrates the work of composer, bass player and bandleader, Charles Mingus.  One of many concerts that the RCS hosts throughout the year, this event will be upbeat and inspiring!

If you enjoy singing, you'll enjoy the GSA Choir's Open Rehearsal! In addition to hearing the musical styling of very talented GSA students, you'll have the chance to sing along!

St Andrews

mathematical biography: a mactutor celebration

16-17 september, parliament hall

The Mathematical Biography Celebration fuses math and literature in an innovative way.  Extending over two days, you will have the chance to discuss the biographies and biographers of mathematicians during this one-of-a-kind event.

If you're in the market for a fancy affair, the Opening Ball gives you the opportunity to dress up and put on your dancing shoes.  The first of many balls held throughout the year at St Andrews, this is a social event not to be missed!

Stirling

'the pebbles were each one alive' the spiritual life of things exhibition

Curated by research fellow, Elizabeth Anderson   The Pebbles Were Each One Alive explores the spiritual nature of objects in literature. The exhibition draws on material from the University of Stirling's collections and the work of GSA student, Charmian Pollock.
