So, it’s 4th of July (Yay!) but you’re in Ireland where nobody notices it (Booo!) Although it may seem a little strange being somewhere where your biggest holiday isn’t celebrated by the masses, it’s an opportunity to make a memorable one. Rather than thinking about all the fun you’re missing out on at home, why not bring the celebrations to Ireland and look back on it in years to come thinking; ‘’wow, remember our study abroad 4th of July when we.. *insert cool activity here.*’’ I’ve come up with a list of suggestions of things you could do to make this 4th of July like none other.

Picnic in a Park

As you are well aware, we are currently experiencing a heatwave. Believe me, this NEVER happens in Ireland, so why not make the most of it? Grab your friends, a shopping bag and a couple of blankets and head to a park. Stop into Lidl or Aldi to buy some delicious treats and pan out in a park in the sun. There are loads of parks around but some of the nicest include Phoneix Park and Marley Park outside the city, or Stephen’s Green, Merrion Square or The Iveagh Gardens right in the city centre.

A Dip in the Sea

There aren’t many people who can say that they have been swimming in the Irish Sea (as it’s usually FREEZING!) so why not tick something big off on the 4th of July. You can combine it with the picnic and head to Dollymount or Sandymount Strands, or go all out and head to the famous forty foot (a really old, well known swimming spot) and get a real Dubliners experience. As always though, the water will be cold and deep. Please be careful if you decide on a 4th of July dip.

Kayak on the Liffey

Why not try something uniquely Irish and very different for your big day? See the city from a completely different angle as you cruise down the River Liffey on a kayak. You’re led by a guide who will give you some history of the city and its many famous bridges, as you look up at the buzzing atmosphere above you. Check out CityKayaking to book.

Afternoon Tea

This would certainly be stretching the budget, but let’s be honest, if you were at home you would be going all out too. There are some very snazzy hotels in Dublin, and they all host AMAZING afternoon teas. It’s something different, and something you probably won’t get at home. Each of them are really unique, but the Art Tea in The Merrion is extra special. I would advise dressing up for these as they’re pretty fancy hotels. If afternoon tea is too much, grab a coffee or drink at The Westin, The Shelbourne or The Merrion as a different (and cheaper!) afternoon treat.

4th of July Party

Maybe this one is a little obvious, but if you can’t go to the party, why not bring the party yourselves?! Go all out, make everyone wear red, white and blue, and throw an American style feast. I know we may not have ranch (ahhh!) but we do have hotdogs, ‘’chips’’, and ‘’soda’’ so you have no excuses! Although it may cost a little more, you can head to the American section of Fallon & Byrne and pick up some staples like Lucky Charms and Reeses Peanut Butter Cups too. Grab some red cups and some baseball caps and you’re basically at home!

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you have a great day and you celebrate it in your own way. Happy 4th of July!
