This weekend marked the 100 year anniversary of the beginning of the Easter Rising and the pinnacle of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Commemorations. The commemorations began on Saturday with a ceremony in the Garden of Remembrance, and a special reception for the relatives of those who fought in the Rising a hundred years ago. On Sunday, thousands of people lined the streets of Dublin to watch the Military Parade, and hear the Proclamation of Independence once again read outside the GPO. The Parade was followed by an open-air concert in Collins Barracks where the One Hundred Years a Nation orchestral piece specially commissioned for the year was premièred. Monday saw another massive parade in Cork City, while those in Dublin could attend any of the huge number of events that were on.

Earlier this semester, Arcadia Ireland hosted a very special regional weekend, bringing students studying in Scotland, England as well as our students in Ireland and Northern Ireland together in Dublin. Students and staff participated in a whole weekend of events to commemorate and investigate the 1916 Rising.

Check out this video for the highlights from the 1916 commemorations and take a look at upcoming centenary events.
