Have you ever heard “Gaixample” or Gay Eixample?

The word comes from a conjunction of “Gai”, which means gay in Catalán, and “Eixample”the name of the neighbourhood.
“La Gaixample” is located between the following streets:
-Carrer d’ Arago – Carrer de Balmes – Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes – Carrer del Comte D’Urgell.
If you walk around this area you will find rainbow flags hanging from shops, bar windows and particular houses. Most of the places located between these streets are mainly intended to the LGBTI public.
Since 1970s, Barcelona has been one of the leading cities in the flight for the rights of the LGBTI community. The city pioneered the promotion of equal rights. Barcelona has become a major destination for tourist from Spain and around the word and the LGBTI community is a key player in this phenomenon.
