We all hope you are just excited for your arrival to the UK as we are! As you prepare to make the journey across the pond (and finish up that last minute packing), be sure to keep these tips in mind.
Everything you need or might need, can be bought in the UK. This is particularly important to note with regards to bulky items. Allow yourself more room in your suitcase and buy these when you get here. We will show you the best place to get bedding, towels and the like during orientation.
This ties in with our first point, but really - you don't need to bring every single pair of jeans or shoes you own. Be realistic and remember that you CAN wash your clothes. Besides, we have a store called Primark that is cheap enough for you to stock up your wardrobe upon arrival.
So if you don't want to risk destroying your hair dryer or your straighteners, don't bring them! You can buy cheap ones once you get here.
The information we deliver at orientation will be incredibly helpful throughout your time here, especially in the early stages when you try and find your way around. Pay attention. Take notes. It will be worth it.
You'll be excited and wanting to do everything all at once. Take a breath and think first. You have plenty of time to get things done. Why not press pause and make sure you do your research first? This way, you are more likely to get the best deals whether you are looking for a day trip or your dinner.
If there are any locations you want to visit, or events you'd like to attend, get planning NOW so you don't miss out! Also, planning in advance will save you money, which is always a bonus.
We may speak the same language, but there are still several differences between the US and the UK. With this change, you may have some feelings of displacement and homesickness but they will fade as you adapt and learn more about your new home.
Your programme manager is here to support you and help with whatever you need. Don't be afraid to ask for advice directly.
