If you are considering study abroad and think next spring is the right time for you, then let's talk about what you can do today to make sure you are ready-

  • Attend any events your school may have this term or next to promote study abroad like the study abroad fair and information sessions to learn more about different programs, ask questions, and get advice from experts in the field.
  • Make a short list of programs you are considering (Our blog about picking a program based on location or major may be of help.)
  • Meet with someone in the study abroad office at your school:
    • Discuss your academic goals and interests with the study abroad advisor
    • Find out if and how your current aid can be applied to study abroad.
    • Inquire about scholarships and other financial aid opportunities for studying abroad.
    • Learn about the process at your home school, including important deadlines.
    • Discuss the pros and cons of taking courses in your major vs GE courses while abroad and make a plan so you can accomplish the one that is the best option for you.
    • Explore the advantages and disadvantages of enrolling in courses related to your major versus general education courses while studying abroad. Develop a plan to pursue the option that suits you best.
    • Find out how credit transfers back from your time abroad.
  • Meet with your Academic Advisor:
    • Prepare a list of questions or topics you would like to cover during the meeting to make the most of your time (You may want to ask them some of the same questions you asked your study abroad advisor).
    • Discuss your interest in studying abroad to ensure that the program you are considering fits with your academic plan and that you understand the type of credit you will receive for the courses you are planning to take abroad.
    • Follow up on any action items or tasks assigned to you after the meeting to ensure you are on track with your academic progress and goals.
  • As you learn how your study abroad term will impact your academic progress and goals, speak to your family about your plans.
  • Plan: Know your home school and program deadlines. For Spring, most program deadlines will happen in late summer into fall. On some rare occasions deadlines are a year out so make sure you know your deadlines. Don’t miss out on your program because you missed a deadline!
  • Stay organized: Keep track of important requirements and tasks related to your study abroad application to ensure a smooth and successful process.
  • Start saving money: Begin saving money for your study abroad experience to cover additional expenses such as travel and personal spending.
  • Reach out: If you have questions email us at arcadiaabroadinquiries@arcadia.edu or drop into our Open Advising Space.
  • If you want to speak to alumni from your program of choice reach out and ask your questions.
  • Look into scholarships and financial aid options: Investigate scholarships, grants, and financial aid opportunities that can help offset the costs of studying abroad.
  • Begin the application process early: Start working on your study abroad application early to give yourself plenty of time to gather all the necessary documents, such as transcripts, letters of recommendation, and essays.
