About
José Sergio Pajares Nievas is a native of Granada. Languages and cultures are two of his greatest passions. After completing a Degree in Translation and Interpreting Studies (UGR), a Master’s Degree in Education (UGR) and a Master’s Degree in Medical and Healthcare Translation (UJI), he decided to go for his Doctorate in Applied Languages, Literature and Translation (UJI), on which he is currently working, focusing on hybrid texts and medical-legal translation. He is also a sworn translator-interpreter and researcher. In fact, he has recently published several papers on translation and education. Sergio is not new to Arcadia, since he served as support staff for our center in Granada already in 2012 and 2013. He has also worked as an English teacher and instructor, referee for academic journals, housing coordinator and HR advisor. He also volunteers as a translator for different NGOs. He plays the Spanish mandolin in a group and loves identifying the similarities and differences between languages and cultures. For him, the most rewarding part of working with students is to see how they discover a new culture and are able to feel like home. As Student Life and Support Services Coordinator (SLSSC), Sergio is always ready to help students in everything they need, look for new activities and places to visit, and show them the unparalleled beauty of Granada and Spain. “Being abroad is not always easy. The best part of my job is seeing how students leave their fears behind them, enjoy their stay, and are aware that countries and cultures have no borders. We know there is no place like home, but Granada is a must. As the Spanish poet Antonio Machado once said, ‘all cities have their charm; Granada has its own and that of all others.’ Living in this city is not only a matter of beauty and tapas, but of new experiences and something our students will never forget.”
