If you have an interest in marine biodiversity, this study abroad program is just for you. Through classroom discussions, guest lectures and field studies you will learn, first hand, about conservation efforts and will even have the opportunity to receive certification in scuba diving.
What better place to learn more than a world-renowned protected area in the Mediterranean, Plemmirio? Located just off the coast of Sicily, near Siracusa, Plemmirio is recognized for its ecological importance especially for the unique biodiversity of its waters, the high number of endemic species and the presence of key areas for the reproduction of pelagic species.
Although it covers only 0.7% of the worldwide marine surface area, the Mediterranean holds 9% of its biodiversity that, in recent decades, has seen an increase of anthropogenic pressure by the fishing industry, tourism, pollution and coastal development.
This unique program features study on Mediterranean ecology, marine ecosystems, biodiversity conservation and environmental and socio-cultural issues. You’ll also visit the charming fishing village of Acitrezza to explore wider inter-related issues.
You’ll complete academic coursework and a research project that is conducted at sea.
One week’s scuba diving training with Water Patrol Officers is included, along with scuba equipment use and certification.
Volunteer and community service work is also available to you.
