Research Projects in Marine Biology and Marine Conservation

The Sant’Anna Institute, located in the historic center of Sorrento, and perched on the cliffside overlooking the fishing village of Marina Grande, offers research projects that will engross you in the important work of marine conservation while adding an exciting element to your resume when applying for graduate school or a career in the field.

In conjunction with researchers at the MPA Punta Campanella, you will investigate the proliferation of microplastics and monitor biodiversity and the effects of pollution in a marine environment. From determining the quantities of microplastic on the sandy beaches in the gulf of Naples, to assessing biodiversity in the Bay of Ieranto, you’ll spend your summer conducting research with leading experts in Italy that will add substantial experience to your resume when applying to graduate school or launching your career in a STEM field.

And living in the south of Italy affords you the opportunity to experience Italian culture while immersing yourself in local life, all while advancing your academic goals.

  • You will enroll in a six-credit research experience that spans 10 weeks from late May to early August.

  • You will be housed either on campus or in apartments or homestays that are a 15–20-minute walk from the institute.

  • Spaces are limited, so please apply early to increase your chances of acceptance onto your chosen project.
