A highly ranked university with a vibrant student life situated in a medieval city

The University of York has a reputation for academic excellence, and offers some of the best teaching of any British university. This is highlighted in York's current faculty rankings: 42nd in the world for arts and humanities (2018), 79th in the world for life sciences (2017) and 82nd in the world for social sciences (2018).

You’ll benefit from excellent faculty and a small group teaching style, which includes a mix of lectures, seminars, and tutorials. Due to the focused nature of York’s academics—in English, for example, a single course can represent a full credit load while other departments allow up to 4 courses per semester—this study abroad program is a great option if you have a strong background with a particular academic focus.

  • University of York is part of the Russell Group which represents 24 leading UK universities committed to maintaining the very best research, an outstanding teaching and learning experience and unrivaled links with business and the public sector. It is the nearest equivalent to the US Ivy League, although we are all public institutions.

  • York was recently voted the safest city in the world by tourists, and the university campus has the lowest crime statistics of any in the UK.

  • Situated in one of Britain’s finest medieval cities, you’ll enjoy York’s buzzing modernity amid its well-preserved past. Stroll walls built over the same boundaries left by the Romans, explore the narrow lanes of the Shambles, and take in the great stained glass windows of the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe, York Minster. You’ll be surrounded by the impressive countryside like the Yorkshire Dales, the Wolds and the North York Moors—all this, in a small but cosmopolitan city halfway between London and Edinburgh!

  • The city has a year-round events, including comedy, food and drink festivals, a Viking festival and Science week. It also has an attractive range of pubs, bars and restaurants as well as a thriving cafe culture - afternoon tea at Bettys Tea Rooms is a world famous tradition.
  • You’ll make friends easily through the Students’ Union, home to student clubs and societies and organized events like concerts, films, plays, and lectures. Join an excursion planned by the Overseas Students’ Association or Outdoor Society into the Yorkshire countryside and throughout Great Britain.
