Study Abroad Experience

Q: How do you feel you changed throughout your study abroad experience?
A: Throughout my study abroad experience, I have grown significantly in terms of adaptability, confidence, and cultural awareness. Living in London has challenged me to navigate a different academic system, manage responsibilities independently, and engage with people from diverse backgrounds. One thing
that truly shocked me was how multicultural London is, especially in the area where I reside for school. Seeing such diversity first hand made me feel in awe and incredibly happy—it reinforced how interconnected the world is and how much there is to learn from different cultures.

Q: What were your expectations going into the program, and how did those evolve?
A:While I expected to immerse myself in a different academic environment and meet diverse people, I didn’t anticipate how quickly I would adapt or how much my perspective on global public health would expand. The experience exceeded my expectations in terms of networking and cultural exchange.

Q:What made you choose the Queen Mary University of London program specifically?
A: I chose Queen Mary University specifically because of its strong emphasis on diversity and community, which aligns with my values.

Identity and Cultural Insights

Q:How would you describe your identity, and has studying abroad changed your perspective on it?I would  describe my identity as that of a Black American woman, a Christian, and someone with a deep passion for global health. My identity has been shaped by my family, who have instilled in me a strong sense of resilience, faith, and commitment to service. Studying abroad thus far has given me the opportunity to see how Black identity is perceived globally, particularly in the UK. I have learned mainly about the Black British experience through conversations with people on campus, inquiring about their perspectives and lived experiences. Additionally, my Global Histories module has deepened my understanding of the lasting
impact of colonialism, providing historical context to many of the cultural and social dynamics I observe today.

Q: What communities or groups did you find yourself a part of during your program?
A: So far, I have found a sense of community among my fellow American students from Arcadia, international students studying abroad at Queen Mary, and local students at the university. These connections have helped me feel supported while also allowing me to learn from different perspectives.

Q: When people asked about your home institution, did you have to explain what an HBCU is? What was their reaction?
A: Yes, I have had to explain to people what an HBCU is. When asked about my home institution, I always start by stating that I attend a Historically Black College and University because I am proud to be part of that legacy. Most people’s reactions have been very heartwarming, as they express how interesting and
meaningful they find it. I enjoy these conversations because they provide an opportunity to educate others about HBCUs and their significance. It also allows for open-minded discussions about history, culture, and the importance of having spaces that celebrate Black excellence.

Support and Resources

Q: How much did you interact with Arcadia outside of orientation? Did you feel supported during your time abroad?
A: I have interacted with Arcadia outside of orientation by doing a check-in with the London staff regarding my adjustment, in addition to getting advice on my course load. The staff is very welcoming and helpful!

Q: Did you take advantage of Arcadia’s resources or participate in their excursions and activities?
A:Yes, I have been in communication with some of the staff from the Arcadia London team regarding my classes in addition to participating in the Windsor Castle excursion and I will also be going on the excursion to Sky Garden!

Independent Exploration

Q: Did you take any excursions or trips on your own? What were the highlights?
A: Yes, I have taken several independent excursions! I visited Notting Hill to see the beautiful murals, particularly one dedicated to Black art, which resonated with my goal of exploring Black history in the UK. I also explored Hampstead Heath, where I enjoyed the scenic views and nature. Additionally, I took trips to Oxford and Budapest, Hungary, both of which offered unique cultural and historical insights.

Q: What are some hobbies or interests you pursued during your time abroad?
A:During my time abroad, I have pursued my interest in public health by participating in an engagement project with a Global Health Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary. This experience has been incredibly enriching, as it allows me to engage in discussions with graduate students and expand my knowledge. Additionally, I have pursued my passion for fashion by joining the ‘Passion for Fashion’ club at Queen Mary as an associate member.
