Welcome to Aotearoa New Zealand! As you get excited to come across the Pacific Ocean for your semester abroad, we are thrilled to share more about the Arcadia Abroad New Zealand Fall 2026 Excursions. Our activities and excursions are designed to help students build a strong local community, dive deep into Māori and Kiwi culture, and explore the stunning landscapes of the North and South Islands.
Best of all, these events are included in your program fee (excluding some local transport costs like bus fares) so are no additional cost to you!
Here is a glimpse of what is waiting for you this Fall 2026 semester:
The journey starts with connecting with your fellow students and the local community:
Volunteer Coffee Catch Ups: Across all our locations—Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin—we start the semester by meeting for the famous NZ flat white coffee. It’s a chance to catch up after your first few days and learn how to get involved in local volunteer opportunities in your new adopted city.
Local Traditions: Students in Christchurch can dive into the city's culture at the Christchurch Night Market, exploring local food and crafts. In Auckland, students can experience New Zealand's sporting obsession firsthand at a NZ Warriors Rugby Match - get ready to cheer “Up the WAHs”.
Understanding the "Kiwi" way of life is a core part of the experience:
Kiwi Kai & Korero (food & chat): Join us for a session dedicated to showcasing New Zealand's famous snacks and treats. Sharing kai (food) is a big part of our culture and ties into a lot of Pacific & Māori traditions. You may even learn how to whip up the iconic NZ Pavlova, lolly cake, or a fan favourite, the NZ Weet-Bix slice. Take these new found baking skills back home and share a bit of our kiwi culture and impress your friends and family with NZ sweet treats!

Historical Exploration: In Wellington, take a tour of Parliament to watch politicians in action during question time, or visit the Weta Workshop for a behind-the-scenes look at how Middle Earth was brought to life on screen.
Māori Heritage: In Taupo, our Wellington students will enjoy a serene sailing trip to the Ngātoroirangi Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings, a stunning example of traditional contemporary Māori artwork only accessible by water.
In New Zealand, we believe in Kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the land). We offer several ways to connect with and protect New Zealand's unique environment:

Hike up Rangitoto: In Auckland, there is nothing better than a day on Rangitoto Island to feel alive. Enjoy the ferry ride out into the harbour and trek through former lava fields to the summit. As a dormant volcanic cone and a protected reserve, it is a spectacular example of New Zealand's unique geology and conservation efforts.
Beach Clean-up & Cricket: Join our Canterbury team for a Volunteer Day at Sumner Beach. We’ll spend a few hours giving back to the coastline by collecting litter, followed by a classic game of beach cricket.
Wildlife Protection: In Wellington, visit Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne, the world’s first fully-fenced urban ecosanctuary. You'll see rare native residents like the Kaka and the Tuatara—a "living fossil" from the age of the dinosaurs.
Marine Education: During the Peninsula Bike Ride in Dunedin, a marine biologist will join us at Portobello to reveal the secrets of our southern oceans and the importance of marine conservation.
Native Bush & Glow Worms: Experience the magic of the New Zealand bush at night at Nicols Creek, where Dunedin students will learn about the life cycle of glow worms in their natural, undisturbed habitat.

We’ve planned several excursions to show you the diverse beauty of New Zealand:
Hobbiton and Raglan Activity Weekend: Students from Auckland and Canterbury will head to the famous surfer town of Raglan for surf lessons and a bush hike, followed by a visit to the magical Hobbiton movie set.

Hanmer Springs Adventure: Our Canterbury students will venture into the mountains to Hanmer Springs, an alpine village famous for its natural hot pools. We’ll enjoy a scenic hike through the forested landscapes and a picnic lunch, with the option to finish the day with a relaxing soak in the thermal waters.
Queenstown Adventure: Otago students will travel to the "adventure capital" for a gondola ride up Ben Lomond, a hike on the world-renowned Routeburn Track, and a high-speed Shotover Jet boat ride.
Taupo and Māori Culture: Wellington students will visit Lake Taupo for an adrenaline-pumping Hukafalls Jetride, hiking in Tongariro National Park, and a serene sailing trip to the Ngātoroirangi Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings.
As the semester draws to a close, we will all gather for a Farewell Dinner. It’s a bountiful night held at a local restaurant where we regroup to laugh and share stories about the adventures we’ve had over the past few months. We celebrate the learning and growth made over the journey; it is a great way to come together again as an Arcadia Abroad whānau(family) before parting ways.
We can’t wait to introduce you to the Arcadia Abroad community and explore Aotearoa New Zealand with you!
