A highly ranked university with a vibrant student life situated in a medieval city

The University of York has a reputation for academic excellence, and offers some of the best teaching of any British university, with particular strengths in art history, English, music, psychology, and historic preservation. You’ll benefit from excellent faculty and a small group teaching style, which includes a mix of lectures, seminars, and tutorials. Due to the focused nature of York’s academics—in English, for example, a single course can represent a full credit load while other departments allow up to 4 courses per term—this study abroad program is a great option if you have a strong background with a particular academic focus.

  • You’ll make friends easily through the Students’ Union, home to student clubs and societies and organized events like concerts, films, plays, and lectures. Join an excursion planned by the Overseas Students’ Association or Outdoor Society into the Yorkshire countryside and throughout Great Britain.

  • Situated in one of Britain’s finest medieval cities, you’ll enjoy York’s buzzing modernity amid its well-preserved past. Stroll walls built over the same boundaries left by the Romans, explore the narrow lanes of the Shambles, and take in the great stained glass windows of the massive stone cathedral, York Minster. You’ll be surrounded by the impressive countryside like the Yorkshire Dales, the Wolds and the North York Moors—all this, in a small but cosmopolitan city halfway between London and Edinburgh!

  • If you apply to study English, you must be an English major at your home institution that has completed four English courses and submit a literary/critical essay of about 1500 words.

  • University of York is part of the Russell Group which represents 24 leading UK universities committed to maintaining the very best research, an outstanding teaching and learning experience and unrivaled links with business and the public sector.
