A big university town in a small, medieval city

Internship placement areas: Fair Trade sector, Museums, Education.

Often called ‘the big university town in a small Italian city,’ Perugia is the home of the Umbra Institute, which offers a variety of courses for study abroad students. They are peppered with academic field study to famous Italian cities and sites, community engagement opportunities, internship courses and extracurricular activities to take you out of the classroom and into the real Italy.

Perugia’s hilltop location serves as the ideal backdrop for your study - Rich in art, architecture, and historical significance, it is internationally recognized as a city of learning.

  • General Studies: Learn Italian (4-6 credits) and study the culture while pursuing courses (3-4 electives) in a variety of disciplines taught in English. You may also choose an Honors Program, Food Studies concentration or Independent Research for qualified students.

  • Honors Program: Choose this option as part of your General Studies if you wish to combine high academic standards, extensive study in the subject area, community engagement, additional contact with instructors and the experience of living with Italian or international students. You’ll also conduct research in your area of choice.

  • Food Studies: This is a curricular concentration within General Studies that applies an interdisciplinary approach to the study of food and its relationship with individuals, the community and society – history, sociology, cultural studies, business practices, literature, politics, science, agriculture and sustainability.

  • Independent Research: This is an opportunity for you to complete a significant research assignment in a topic of your choice as one component of your study abroad experience.

  • Local Direct Enroll: If you’d like a fully immersive experience you can study full time at one of our two partner institutions: Università per Stranieri or Università degli Studi di Perugia
