Explore international food cultures

This unique program looks at food and sustainability issues from many angles – history, sociology, cultural studies, anthropology, business, politics, science, agriculture and sustainability. You will explore how we as individuals and as communities relate to issues around food in Italy, America and globally. What are the implications on local and world levels of our approach to food sources and production? How has history, culture and lifestyle influenced how we view food in different cultures? Explore the enviable Italian food culture for yourself.

Your fascinating study will take place at the Umbra Institute in the beautiful, hilltop, medieval city of Perugia: the big university in a small Italian city. A hallmark of the Umbra Institute programs is community engagement so you’ll have many opportunities to get to know the locals and really sample Italian life.

  • You’ll take three courses in food studies, an Italian language course (at your level) and one elective of your choice.

  • Each thematic course includes a series of excursions and co-curricular activities that are an integral part of the curriculum including guest lecturers, site visits, and hands-on experience.

  • While this program is great for those with a passion for food it’s particularly well suited to those hoping to enter a career in the wider food industry.
