General Course Information

All students enroll in four courses (16 credits), which is equivalent to a full semester of CU Boulder credit. Students are required to enroll in a Cornerstone Course, LONS HSSN 112 Showcasing the Nation, which is aimed to connect students directly to the city of London.  Students will have the option of selecting the remainder of their courses from a wide variety on offer. The grades you receive abroad will be converted to study abroad pass/fail credit on your CU Boulder record.

LONS HSSN 112 Showcasing the Nation: First Year Cornerstone Course - 4 Credits

In this cornerstone course, first year students will reflect on notions of national identity in the context of Britain’s history from the last 100 years. Students will navigate London’s complicated narratives, think critically about how Britain presents itself to the rest of the world, and analyze unfamiliar aspects of what it means to be British. This course will foster community engagement through site visits, required readings and personal interviews, and will assess student learning outcomes through various short essays, presentations, classroom discussion, and a final paper.

CU Boulder Equivalents

Fulfilling general education requirements while in London will allow you to begin to explore a liberal arts education that is both broad and deep. Students are encouraged to choose elective courses in London based on their interests. There is no requirement to fulfill multiple general education requirements while abroad. You will have more than enough time to complete all your requirements while at CU Boulder! But as you consider your elective courses for the fall, keep this context in mind as you seek a well-rounded academic experience in London. Some courses offered in London offer the opportunity to focus on topics that can’t be taught in the same way anywhere else in the world and we encourage you to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

You will receive CU Boulder "in residence" credit for courses taken on this program as if you had completed the work on the Boulder campus.  The grades you receive abroad will be converted to study abroad pass/fail credit on your CU Boulder record. The pass/fail credit earned on a CU Boulder education abroad program is exempt from college limits on student-elected pass/fail credit. Study abroad pass/fail does not factor into your CU GPA, meaning Global Start students will not have a GPA after their first semester.

If you have specific courses about credit transfer to CU Boulder,  please contact GlobalStart@colorado.edu.
