Join Jane Gunn-Lewis, Student Engagement Fellow, for her in person session on Thursday, March 12, 2026 from 8:45am-9:45am CST; Belonging While Abroad - A Paradox to Navigate or a False Promise?
This session explores the tension between the idealized promise of study abroad—instant friendships and lifelong belonging—and the reality many Gen Z students face, including increased anxiety, loneliness, and a desire for both new experiences and community. Drawing on insights from student experiences in New Zealand and Italy, the discussion challenges assumptions about connection abroad and highlights practical strategies for students, faculty, and staff to intentionally build and support community at home and overseas, while inviting participants to share their own approaches and successes.
SPEAKERS: Jane B. Gunn-Lewis, Brittani Smit, Maureen Gordon(she/her/hers), and Anna Foster
