Queen’s University Belfast Courses

You are required to take a full course load. Most students studying at Queen’s only take three courses per semester, which are typically worth 15 American credits.

  • Make sure your credits transfer back for credit with your home school and that you are registered for a full academic load according to your home school policies – this is your responsibility.
  • Please be flexible about courses – we can’t guarantee placement in specific courses.
  • Please review your course choices with your academic or study abroad advisor, and submit the online course registration form to The College of Global Studies at Arcadia University.
  • Arcadia University does not issue pass/fail grades for work completed overseas.

Choosing Your Courses

All students must take a full academic workload of 60 CATS credits per semester. Use the following chart to help you select your course schedule:

  • 1 Queen’s course (20 CATS credits) = 5 American credits per semester
  • 1 Queen’s half course (10 CATS credits) = 2.5 American credits per semester

When selecting your courses from the Queen’s, you should be aware of some differences in terminology. In Northern Ireland, the word for class or course is called a module.

At UK universities, undergraduate degrees consist of 3 years of study. You can identify the level of a course from the course code. Codes starting with a 1 are Level 1, those starting with a 2 are Level 2, and those starting a 3 are Level 3. (For example, HIS1003 is a Level 1 course.) You cannot select classes that start with a number higher than 3.

The Queen’s course catalog will automatically list the departments available at Queen’s; however, confirm that you are viewing the Queen’s courses by checking the institution drop-down menu found at the top of the Catalog.

  • Scroll through the list of departments and select the department that interests you. It may be easier to view all departments by expanding the selection, just click on "expand all."
  • Click on the department link. Select either the course code or title to view a short course description, including the means of assessment, credits, entry requirements, and course duration.
  • View timetables by selecting "view class sections."
  • Courses are labeled autumn semester, spring semester or full year.

In addition to your proposed list of 6-10 courses, we recommend that you choose a series of alternate courses. Your first choice selections may not be available due to scheduling changes, time conflicts, prerequisites or cancellations.

Please note: The Film Studies department will only accept students who have some background in Film Studies. The English department also only accepts students with some background in English, especially in their creative writing modules.

Enrollment Process

Official course registration will take place upon arrival at Queen’s. The preliminary course form you submit to Arcadia prior to acceptance is not set in stone. You will have a two week drop/add period at the beginning of the semester where you can make changes to your course registration.

If your enrollment is conditional upon entry into a specific course or courses, it is very important that you indicate these requirements at the bottom of the preliminary course form on your Arcadia Passport.

There is a surcharge that is assessed by Queen’s for coursework completed in the sciences. This surcharge will be added to your account after you register for courses at Queen’s.
