River Semester Lodging

As the River Semester is a non-traditional study away experience, an atypical housing arrangement characterizes a large portion of this program. You will camp for 8-12 weeks of the semester, dependent upon itinerary and weather conditions. You should expect rustic, camping-style characteristics, including no running water or electricity. While camping, students utilize the river for bathing or have a brief wash at the campsite.  You should expect 3 people per tent while camping.

The program does offer hostel and hotel arrangements when in cities and dormitory housing while at research facilities. In this type of housing, you can expect 4 people per room.

River Semester Meals

All food is provided, including campsite food and restaurant food while in towns and cities. Self-prepared campsite food is consumed communally and is basic and substantial, designed to fuel you through the rigorous physical portion of the program (think high carb/fewer perishable ingredients for ease of transport and energy for paddling). At times, students also take part in elective restaurant meals at their own expense.

Equipment

Canoes, paddles, life jackets (PFDs), tents, cooking gear, tarps, first aid, and waterproof Duluth packs are supplied. Some additional equipment (sleeping bags/pads/rain gear) is available for students who have a demonstrable need; otherwise, students must supply their own sleeping bags, rain gear and pads. Please let Arcadia know if you require this additional camping equipment upon acceptance.

Laundry

Group laundry is included and is provided once per week. Additional laundry is at your expense.

Books

An e-library and several hard copies are part of the program gear. Additional copies will need to be carried by you individually in your own gear.

Gear and Spending Money

Guidance on these additional areas of supplies will be provided by the program upon acceptance.
