Arcadia in Granada Courses

You will take five courses for 12-15 credits. All students are required to participate in the 3-credit cornerstone course, Cultural Diversity in Contemporary Spain: Migrations, Identities and Historical Heritage. Students who elect to participate in one of the Arcadia+ options will also take the required associated elective course. 

  • Please review your courses with your academic or study abroad advisor to ensure they will transfer back to your home school and that you are following your home school’s policies.
  • Please be flexible – we can’t guarantee specific courses. If your participation in the program depends on a particular course, be sure to make a note on your online course form.

Arcadia Cornerstone Course

*Students may opt to submit their written assignments for the Cornerstone course in English or Spanish. Spanish submission gives students the opportunity to further develop Spanish writing skills and intensify integration into Spanish life. Students must have the vocabulary and composition skills to produce work at a similar fluency to their English academic writing.

Pre-Session & Language Tracks

  • Select the track you intend to pursue from the options below.
  • Final placement in Spanish Tracks will be determined by a placement exam.
  • The Pre-Session is not a track, but a short-term program that is incorporated into the Fall track. Pre-Session is optional for Spring students

Pre-Session intensive language session

Appropriate for students at any level of Spanish proficiency. It is an excellent opportunity for students on the cusp of pursuing a more advanced program track to increase their proficiency.

  • An intensive language course (Intensive Spanish Language Course) worth 5 credits during the Fall semester and 4 credits for Spring is available to all students. The specific level of this language course will be determined by a placement exam taken in Granada.
  • This course takes place prior to the start of the regular semester. Beginning Fall 2024, Pre-Session fees and tuition will be included in the semester fees.

BEGINNER SPANISH TRACK (LEVEL 1-4 AT CLM)

Appropriate for students who have completed zero to three courses of college level Spanish or the equivalent.

  • Students take Speaking and Writing Skills (3-credits) and Spanish Grammar (3-credits). The specific level of these language courses will be determined by a placement exam taken during the program orientation.

    • Beginner (Levels 1-4) Spanish courses will appear on student transcripts as 100 or 200 level courses.
  • Students pursue two 3-credit electives from  the CLM offerings in English (Semester Programs – CLCE).

    • Beginner (Levels 1-4) electives will appear on student transcripts as 200 or 300 level courses.

INTERMEDIATE SPANISH TRACK (LEVEL 5-6 AT CLM)

Appropriate for students who have completed four to five courses of college level Spanish or the equivalent.

  • Students take Speaking and Writing Skills (3-credits) and Spanish Grammar (3-credits). The specific level of these language courses will be determined by a placement exam taken during the program orientation.

    • Intermediate (Levels 5-6) Spanish courses will appear on student transcripts as 300 level courses.
  • Students pursue two 3-credit electives from the CLM offerings in English and Spanish (Semester Programs – CLCE).

    • Intermediate (Levels 5-6) electives will appear on student transcripts as 300 level courses.
  • Students who place in this track can choose to pursue an internship course in Education. Those interested must pursue the option which includes 120 hours of embedded placement time. Please contact your Program Advisor for more information.

    • The internship course will appear on student transcripts as a 300 level course.

ADVANCED SPANISH TRACK (LEVEL 7-9 AT CLM)

Appropriate for students who have completed six or more courses of college level Spanish or the equivalent. These courses are equivalent to 400 level/final year courses and require significant proficiency for approval to enroll in this track.

  • Students take one mandatory course (3 credits) from the following options: Oral Production and Interaction Skills, Written Texts in Spanish or Spanish Grammar. The specific level of this language course will be determined by a placement exam taken during the program orientation.
  • Students pursue three 3-credit electives from the CLM offerings in Spanish (Semester Programs – Hispanic Studies Course).
  • Advanced (Levels 7-9) electives will appear on student transcripts as 400 level courses.
  • Students who place in this track can choose to pursue an internship course in Education, Business or Health Centers. Those interested must pursue the option which includes 120 hours of embedded placement time. Please contact your Program Advisor for more information.

    • The internship course will appear on student transcripts as a 300 level course.

Special Considerations & Course Restrictions

  • Your Spanish language courses will be determined by your level of fluency.
  • Final course enrollment will be determined by the CLM after your placement exam during orientation.
  • Indicate the level you truly believe you will place into, as electives fill up quickly.

    • If you are uncertain of your level, your Program Advisor can recommend a language assessment option upon request.
  • Arcadia will need your transcript before your courses can be reviewed.
  • Students who are interested in interning or volunteering in education or in fields that include interaction with children during their time in Spain should be aware they will likely be required to show proof of a state-issued child abuse clearance and/or a background check. Please speak with your Program Advisor for more information.

Enrollment Process

Official course registration will take place upon arrival. The online course form you submit to Arcadia prior to acceptance is not set in stone. To fill out this form:

  • Course code: The CLM does not use course codes, so please write "CLM" in the course code column.
  • Course title: Please write out the full title of the course you wish to take followed by (English) or (Spanish).
  • Session: This is the term in which you are applying, i.e. Fall 2024.
  • Credits: number of credits the course you wish to take is worth.
  • Track: indicate which track you intend to pursue.
  • Add any mandatory Spanish language course(s) for your track to your course form.
  • Provide alternate course selections in case your first choices are unavailable.
