A new version of the U.S. Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is now available for U.S. citizens and nationals traveling internationally. As before, signing up for STEP allows travelers to subscribe to email alerts and updates from the nearest U.S. embassy and it makes it easier for the State Department to contact travelers in the case of a large-scale emergency.
All students currently enrolled in STEP have gotten or will shortly get an email through their STEP registration sharing this update and prompting them to sign in with the new portal. Embassies are instructing enrollees to "visit step.state.gov to enroll in the updated STEP to set your preferences and continue receiving alerts and messages from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate."
