We’re pleased to provide an update on James Cook University’s transition to a trimester calendar, set to begin in Spring 2025. As we collaborate with JCU staff on this new approach, we’ve clarified several key details to ensure we can effectively advise students.

Program Length
Each trimester will be 12 weeks long, including teaching, reading days, and the exam period. For institutions with specific rules regarding program length and credit allocation, please refer to JCU’s comprehensive 2025 Trimester Calendar for more information.

Standard Course Load
While the typical full-time load is 3 JCU courses (equivalent to 12 US credits), JCU recognizes that some North American study abroad partners may require students to take 4 courses (16 US credits). Students should carefully consider this option, keeping in mind the intensity of the shorter term.
Arcadia Abroad will consider students fully enrolled with either 3 or 4 courses and will advise them to follow their home institution’s regulations.
Important: Students must select either 3 or 4 courses at the time of application, and this selection cannot be changed after submission. We appreciate your support in advising students on the appropriate course load for their needs.

Courses Offered
Class options will be listed on JCU’s new JCU Subject Search Tool, which allows students to filter for study abroad options. This tool provides essential details, including when, where, and how each subject will be offered, enabling students to make informed choices.
According to JCU, the full list of courses for Trimester 1 (Spring 2025) will be available on the JCU Subject Search Tool by the end of September. Please note that current course listings on their website may not be fully updated.
More areas of study will be added in future trimesters as JCU completes the transition to the trimester structure.

Program Fees
Arcadia Abroad’s program fee will be set to accommodate up to 4 JCU courses per trimester, equivalent to 16 US credits. Housing costs will decrease in line with the shorter term length. For more information, please refer to JCU’s Student Accommodation Guide.

JCU remains a valued partner, particularly in Biology and Environmental Sciences, and we look forward to continuing to support a positive student experience at this exceptional institution.
