So you’ve decided to spend 4 months abroad in Australia!

You’ve made the right choice.

Weather

Start with checking your average temperatures for your area – often our locations don’t have the same extremes as some parts of the USA

Jet Lag

Use an app like "time shifter" to start your body clock in your new time zone ahead of time and beat the jetlag.

Pack Light

Use the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 rule as a foundation - make sure most items mix / match
5 tops
4 bottoms
3 dresses / 3 shoes
2 swimsuits / 2 bags
1 hat / 1 sunnies / 1 watch

Tips

  • Roll your clothes
  • Add with accessories – scarves, jewellery, beanies (if it’s Melbourne)
  • Remember the important bits – undies / socks
  • Weather equipment: rain jackets / sunglasses / hiking boots / warm layers and themals (if travelling to NZ) etc
  • Technological equipment: laptops / phones and all cords and converters etc.
  • Then add a few favourites and extra bits that you love and make you feel special or remind you of home.
  • Only pack things you love and wear regularly – stick with your usual style, nothing worse than feeling uncomfortable trying out a completely new style when you’re already going to stick out as a tourist.
  • Take photocopies of your passport / tickets / ID cards
  • Take photos of your home / family to pin on your walls
  • Pre-pack the week before to see how much you think you need vs what you can realistically fit in – leave room for souvenirs / mementos you can bring home from Australia too. There’s nothing worse than a pre-flight packing panic!
  • When it doubt - leave it out.  You can always get what you need here in Australia

“Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” – Anthony Bourdain
