Pan-African Studies
Learning firsthand about the histories, cultures, and socio-political dynamics of the Pan African world, both the continent itself and its ever-evolving diaspora.
- The program, Decolonizing the Mind: Racial and Environmental Injustice allows you to spend one semester in both Namibia and South Africa, two nations that have struggled against the lasting impacts of colonialization, apartheid, the fight for liberation, and ethnic and racial tensions. This program examines how people can organize themselves towards positive social change and the triumph of the human spirit.
- Through your work in and out of the classroom, envision yourself as agents of change, understand and address systems of inequity, racism, and violence that affect communities of color all across the Pan African world.
- Learn about the challenges posed by underdevelopment, globalization, extreme inequality, and the legacies of apartheid; in addition to the impact of gender, race, culture, and identity on democratic processes, human rights issues, and social and economic advancement today.
- In addition to your academic courses, gain hands-on work experience in a development agency through an academic internship for credit.
- Meet with: members of the African National Congress and opposition parties, church leaders, feminist and human rights activists, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) representatives, and students and professors from the University of Namibia.
- Explore the local community and natural beauty of these countries with free excursions to places like: Etosha Game National Reserve, Namib Desert, Walvis Bay, Johannesburg, Cape Town, and the Eastern Cape.
