UCD Course Catalog

When selecting your courses from UCD's website, you should be aware of some differences in terminology. In Ireland a class or course is called a module. Here are some tips on how to find your way around UCD’s Course Catalog.

Arts (Humanities)

To view the classes, click "Arts” from the blue box then click "BA Joint Honours FT" from the drop down. Scroll to the bottom of the page to view the department groupings and departments of study. Each department listed is a link to the classes within that subject.

Departmental Choices: Students are permitted to select courses from cross multiple disciplines within the College of Arts (choice is subject to capacity issues, timetable constraints and pre-requisites). Certain departments are grouped together and are not allowed to be taken together because of scheduling conflicts/timetable constraints (for example English & Politics, Sociology & Philosophy). Please view the subject groupings (Groups A-F) on the UCD Course Catalog to make sure the departments you wish to study in are not grouped together. Students may also choose one or two courses from outside the College of Arts.

• Major and Minor indications refer to full degree requirements, not to visiting student course selection. Lecture (referred to as "Core") and Seminar (referred as "Option") course offerings are a requirement of certain departments. You may be required to enroll in one or two lecture courses for the semester depending on your departments of study. Be certain to take these into consideration during the preliminary course selection process.
• Typically, students enrolling in the College of Arts divide their course work between three departments. Students tend to find that selecting courses from more than three or four departments leads to timetable clashes.

Classes of interest to study abroad students:

•  IRST30150 - Ireland Uncovered: This course is specifically for International Students and has been quite popular with previous study abroad students.
• ARCH20170 - Discovering Ireland: Landscape: Unlike other classes, this class is completely taught on a number of field-trips to archaeological sites, with no classroom element. It complements classes such as Ireland Uncovered.

• IR10050 - Irish Language: This class is recommended for students who have no knowledge of the Irish language or who know only a few words and phrases.

English 

English majors will receive priority registration for English classes. These students can select up to three classes, which will consist of 2 lecture classes and 1 seminar class. Students will only be pre-registered to their lecture classes. Seminar class registration will take place on campus at the start of the semester. Students who are not English majors are permitted to take 2 lecture classes only, subject to availability. A list of English classes is sent to all incoming Arts students prior to course registration.

Psychology 

Psychology majors will receive priority registration and can select up to a maximum of 3 Psychology classes. Students who are not Psychology majors can select classes subject to availability; availability is typically very limited. A list of Psychology classes is sent to all incoming Arts students prior to course registration.

History 

History majors will receive priority registration. History majors are advised to take a minimum of 2 History courses during their semester abroad at UCD although this is not a compulsory requirement. Students who are not History majors can select classes subject to availability.

Business

• Students enrolling in classes at Quinn must take at least four Quinn courses. One or two additional courses may be selected from outside the Quinn School.
• Students attending the Quinn School of Business are required to take SBUS 30010 "From Colony to Republic: the Making of Modern Ireland". This class will introduce you to Irish history and culture; field trips to places of historical interest are an integral component of this class.

Science

• Introduction to Scientific Research (SCI 30010) is a special course offered to College of Science study abroad students only. It introduces students to the principles of scientific research through attachment to an active research group in the College of Science. Students will become active members of a research group and work under the direction of the group's Principal Investigator. Students will learn about the research focus of the group and conduct independent research into the scientific literature of relevance to the group's activity. They will shadow a member of the research team in the laboratory and master one basic and one advanced laboratory skill, in addition to learning how to develop a hypothesis, analyse the research data, and write a scientific abstract.   This course is available in both fall and spring semesters; worth 2.5 American credits.
