Applicants to the University of Cambridge must submit two graded academic writing samples in your major subject(s) of study. These writing samples should be at least 1500 words in length (excluding footnotes and bibliography).

University of Oxford

Oxford applicants must submit marked copies of two graded academic writing samples in your major subject(s) of study. These marked copies of your academic work should include your professor's comments and grade. These writing samples should be at least 1500 words in length (excluding footnotes and bibliography).

Students who wish to study in mathematics, science, engineering, quantitative economics, music, or related fields, who do not have lengthy prose writing samples. may submit documents in other formats. Acceptable documents include but are not limited to problem sets, lab reports or experiment writeups, case studies, or exams, as long as the exams are not primarily multiple choice.

English Literature writing samples must be papers relating to literary criticism or literary analysis - creative writing samples are not accepted as application documents.

If you are applying to two different departments, you must submit one writing sample in each subject area you wish to study.

University of York

Applicants must supply a sample of recent written work, at least 1500 words, if applying to the English, History or Art departments.

Scottish Universities International Summer School

All applicants to Creative Writing must upload a sample of prose or drama piece of a maximum of 3,000 words or poetry of a maximum of 50 lines.

Victoria University of Wellington

Only applicaple for CREW and WRIT courses:

  • A five to ten page writing sample (one and a half or double spaced) in the genre for which you are applying. This may be a single piece, an extract, or a range of shorter pieces, and will be especially important in deciding admissions. Please ensure your name is on each page and include a cover page listing the titles of each piece.
  • A cover letter in support of your application:
    • This brief statement (no more than one page) should outline any previous writing experience and your future aspirations. If necessary, it may also provide context for the writing sample you have submitted.
