“θα θέλα ενά…” (pronounced as “tha thela ena”), otherwise known as “I would like one…” The options are endless and delicious.
Do I want a classic σουβλάκι (sou-vla-ki) with everything? Σουβλάκι is a specific style of grilling meat. I normally ask for a πίτα γύρο κοτόπουλο απ’ ολα (pita gyro ko-toh-pou-lo ap ohla). What’s that? It’s chicken gyro meat on a pita with τζατζίκι sauce, onions, tomatoes, and french fries. And yes, the french fries are on the sandwich.
Maybe I’m in the mood for something small. ΚΑΛΛΙΜΑΡΜΑΡΟ (kal-li-mar-mar-o) is the place to go. They are a local bakery with some crazy low prices and some seriously good food. Their muffins are to die for and no one can get enough of the σπανακόπιτα (spa-na-ko-pi-ta) which are small spinach and cheese pies. Fun fact! The word Καλλιμαρμαρο means “the Stadium.” So if you are ever in Greece you might hear people refer to the Olympic Stadium as Καλλιμαρμαρο.
If you want the true Greek experience then you simply have to go to a cafe while in town. But what to order? Do you want a ζωστόσ σοκολάτα (zo-st-os so-ko-la-ta) - a hot chocolate, a simple καφέσ (ka-fes) - coffee, or τσαι (ts-ai) - tea?
Greece is full of some wonderful food and treats. For example, check out this crazy μιλκ σέικ (milk sei-k) that I got this past week. It was so big that I didn’t know where to start! Who knows what fun places you’ll find while studying abroad. I certainly never thought that I would find a milkshake like this in real life.
