The deadline for fall programs in New Zealand is quickly approaching (March 15 for all four), and we can't stop thinking about meat pies and pavlova. If your knowledge of New Zealand is limited to "Lord of the Rings" or Kiwi Fruit, we have so much more to share with you!

If you occasionally confuse Australia and New Zealand as the way many Americans do, watch this two-part series: "The Difference Between Australia & New Zealand Pt1" and "The Difference Between Australia & New Zealand Pt2."

Here are some things about New Zealand many Americans do not know-

  • New Zealand is made up of two main islands, the North Island and the South Island, both offering diverse landscapes and attractions.
  • The country is known for its stunning natural beauty, including majestic mountains, pristine beaches, lush forests, and geothermal wonders.
  • New Zealand is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with a wide range of activities such as hiking, skiing, bungee jumping, and surfing available.
  • The Maori culture is an integral part of New Zealand's identity, with traditional arts, crafts, and performances still preserved and celebrated today.
  • The country is home to unique wildlife, including the iconic kiwi bird, as well as the endangered yellow-eyed penguin and Hector's dolphin.
  • New Zealand is famous for its wine production, particularly Sauvignon Blanc from the Marlborough region, which has gained international acclaim.
  • The Lord of the Rings film trilogy was filmed in various locations throughout New Zealand, showcasing the country's stunning landscapes to a global audience.
  • Despite its remote location, New Zealand is a modern and developed country with a high standard of living and quality healthcare and education systems.

Among all the other reasons to study in New Zealand spending time in the Southern Hemisphere means the fall semester typically starts in July and students will be home by Thanksgiving. This works well for students on the traditional semester calendar as well as those dealing with the quarter system.
