Christmas is coming! And here in Spain we have our typical sweets for this season: Turrones, Neulas y Polvornes!
The most famous ones are Turrones! You can find different types and flavors, depending on the ingredients used and how it is prepared. However, there are two typical ones made from a mixture of honey, eggs, sugar and toasted nuts; the hard and brittle (turrón duro), and the soft and chewy (turrón blando). In Catalonia, the most typical nougat is made with egg yolk and a caramelized crust. Contemporary adaptations are made with chocolate truffle, pistachio, lime, crème brulée, rum, and many other types.
Polvorones: Polvorón’ comes from ‘polvo’ (dust), because of the sensation you will feel ones you put in your mouth! They are a very soft and crumbly type of Spanish shortbread made of: pork lard, flour, sugar and cinnamon. Like many other sweets from southern Spain, the original recipe was inspired by an Arab preparation.
Neulas: a type of Catalan biscuit, eaten traditionally at Christmas with cava! It consists of a very thin sheet of a mixture of egg whites, butter, sugar and flour, flavored with lemon and rolled. Currently, there are some other popular versions like the ones covered with a chocolate layer.
