Known as Natale di Roma, the annual birthday (2.770th) celebration is based on the legendary Foundation of Rome by Romulus in 753 BC.

On the big day itself, April 21st, the Foundation of Rome is marked at the Circus Maximus in the afternoon with a number of ceremonies. Among these is the trench-digging ritual, known as the tracciato del solco, at around 3 pm. This tradition recalls the founding of ancient Roman towns when a trench was dug and offerings thrown into it to encourage the gods to watch over the town’s inhabitants.

On Sunday, April 23rd, the celebration will culminate with the costumed parade with more than 1500 gladiators, vestal virgins and senators, starting at 11:15am from Circus Maximus.

The parade is organised by the Gruppo Storico Romano, an association that is structured as a real school of gladiators and his aim is to re-enacting historical events, battle and fights in the city centre.

Spanish Steps

After two years, the Spanish Steps return to offer a wonderful view. The steps are decorated by hundreds of bowls of lily and white rhododendrons. Once the azaleas have ceased flowering they will be returned to the city nurseries at St. Sisto until next spring.

Rose Garden

Don't miss the incredible view of the Palatine ruins that you can enjoy from this little park totally devoted to the roses. There are 1.200 different species of roses many of them gifts from countries around the world.

The Rome Rose Garden covers 10.000 m square and each section has rose varieties characteristic of, or grown in, the respective variety.

Eterna#2770

This year Rome is celebrating its 2770th birthday with three days of events designed for Rome and the Romans! The second edition of Eterna#2770 will take place at the banks of the Pond of Eur from today to Sunday, April 23rd.

Music, street art, sport, cinema, performance and food will be the protagonists of these days.
