The Arcadia Dublin Center is delighted to host the first of this semesters Tin whistle workshops!

A tin whistle is a small, simple six-holed instrument made of…..you guessed it! Tin! Most primitive cultures have some form of flute instrument and the Irish tin whistle is strongly linked to the Celtic traditions and Celtic music.

For such a small instrument, the tin whistle has an amazing sound, remember ''Concerning Hobbits'' from the Lord of the Rings? or ''My heart will go on'' from Titanic? Both were played by simple tin whistles. The best thing about the tin whistle is its simplicity. It’s a really easy instrument to learn, and is played by children in most Irish elementary schools.

For all these reasons and more, we decided to offer a four-week workshop to our students studying in Dublin Universities. These weekly classes are held in the Arcadia Center in the Christchurch area of Dublin and are a fantastic opportunity for students to take a break from the books and tune into a different part of the study abroad experience.

I hope while they are in Ireland, these students will find a traditional Irish music session or two, and now they can join in with their handy pocket-sized instrument. Even if it is just a rendition of twinkle-twinkle!
