You may have noticed that Arcadia University is celebrating Rhythms of the World this year. As part of the Life in the Mind Series, the lectures and events explore music in a exciting way. You may not need an excuse to enjoy music but we thought we'd help by listing our top 5 places for FREE live music.

We understand that it can be difficult to budget whilst studying in London, we have been there ourselves. Though it maybe hard to budget, this doesn't mean you need to sit in your room every evening eating Pot Noodles. There are many FREE events happening across London everyday. As you may already know, this global city doesn't do things by halves and the FREE events are no exception.

This post we have given you the top five places to see FREE live music.

1. The Southbank Centre

Not only is the Southbank Centre on the Southbank, it also offers you free live music! On Friday evenings you can treat your ears to everything from jazz to folk. Or you can stop by for some lunchtime fun on Fridays or Sundays for music in the Central Bar of the Royal Festival Hall.

2. St Martin-in-the-Fields

This beautiful church was built in 1726 and is worth a visit for its history alone. There are free lunchtime recitals on Monday, Tuesday and Friday at 1-2pm. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s located in Trafalgar Square. Why would you NOT check it out?

3. The Royal Opera House

You can book online here for your chance to go along to a free lunchtime recital at 1pm on a Monday. These recitals feature rising stars of the Jette Parker Young Artists programme, as well as members of the Royal Opera House Orchestra. Browse the site as well, as there are plenty of other free events.

4. Notting Hill Arts Club

Check out the upcoming events at the Notting Hill Arts Club here. Every Saturday afternoon they host a showcase of live bands between 4 and 8pm. Great location, and great music. Plus, it’s all free!

5. Covent Garden Market

If you are just looking to hear some music as you go about your day, then wander through Covent Garden. In the middle of the market, if you look down to the lower level there is always something going on. Grab yourself a coffee and have a listen to some classical melodies. You might even be treated to some opera.
