The first Talk of the Town! was a roaring success, wasn't it?
Well, whether you were one of the many that attended that event or not, you'll want to come along to the second installment of the series for sure.
As before, you must email london@arcadia.edu to secure your place. Time and location will be updated via the facebook group, so keep an eye open for information there.
If any of you have come along to the Talk Sport meetings each week, you might already have a sense of the differences between British and European sports and US sports. These differences range from the sports that we play, to fan culture, to how sports are regarded in high school...the differences are endless!
Join John Brewer as he explains how sport is governed in the UK, and in particular the role of government funded agencies such as UK Sport, and the Sports Councils, as well as the role of National Governing Bodies of Sport.
More specifically, what are the challenges faced when introducing and growing a sport such as American Football into the UK, and what role can the media play? John will also highlight the role that the NFL, and NFL Europe, play in the UK as well as challenges faced with the "grass roots" development of American Football, and the important role that universities can play in the sustainable growth of American Football in the UK.
John Brewer is Professor of Applied Sport Science and Head of the School of Sport, Health and Applied Science at St Mary's University Twickenham. JB has also been chair of two UK National Governing Bodies of Sport, including the British Handball Association during the London 2012 Olympic Games, a traditionally "non-British" sport that has faced similar challenges to American Football in the UK. He is also a Board Member of British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) and recently gave evidence to an All-Party Parliamentary Committee on the growth of American Football in the UK.
