A HISTORY OF WEATHER IN THE ENGLISH IMAGINATION

Alexandra Harris, winner of the 2010 Guardian First Book Award, will be speaking about the importance of weather to English cultural life. There have been times when the numbers on arain gauge count for more than a pantheon of aerial gods; there have been times for meteoric marvels and times for gentle breeze. Percy Shelley wanted to turn himself into a cloud, while the Victorian art critic John Ruskin wished to store the clouds in bottles. Exploring the work of poets, writers, artists and thinkers, Dr Harris brings us a conversation that crosses the centuries, exposing how the elements are elemental to our inner lives.
