Stratford-Upon-Avon

Tradition & Innovation, Life & Death

Shakespeare's Birthplace

This year, the world has been commemorating 400 years since the death of William Shakespeare which makes it a very special time to visit where he was born and buried in Stratford-Upon-Avon.

Learn more about the life and times of the man who went on to become one of the world's most famous playwrights, including visiting his birthplace and family homes. Afterwards you can take a stroll along the river and visit the charming shops that this medieval market town has to offer.

Theatre - The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

Underground, Pop Culture

Based on the novel by Mark Haddon, The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time is the award winning production from the National Theatre that has taken the West End by storm. In 2013 it won 7 Olivier Awards, and in 2015 won 5 Tony Awards including Best Play.

It's a murder mystery, but not as you would expect. The story is told through the eyes of 15 year old Christopher Boone who finds it difficult to fit in and is often an outsider. Christopher is brilliant at maths, less good with people and loves prime numbers. When a neighbors dog mysteriously dies, Christopher's detective work ends up taking him on a journey he is not at all prepared for.

T20 Cricket

Tribes, Sensory

Did you know Cricket is the second most popular sport in the World (behind football) with around 2.5 Billion fans?

T20, also known as Twenty-20, is a shorter version of cricket. Where a normal cricket match can take between 3-5 days to complete, a T20 match lasts just 3 hours. The faster pace makes it a very entertaining form of cricket, where you will witness lots of runs scored and wickets lost. If you don’t have a clue what that means - you will by the end of the match! Plus you will have spent the evening at the Prestigious Lord’s Cricket Ground, in the crowd with 25,000 faithful fans at this traditional British sporting event.

Royal Ascot

Tribes, Tradition & Innovation

The Queen attends every day of this event. Royal Ascot is Britain’s most valuable horse race meeting, with more than £5.5 million in prize money. Anticipated and revered, these five days are made for socialising. 51,549 bottles of champagne were quaffed in 2012. Long seen as a spectacle of fashion and style, each year the meeting is broadcast to audiences around the globe, yet to experience it in person is something altogether more special.

Our faculty member and Sociology lecturer, Dr Chris Mcmillan, writes “Sport provides a wonderful window into a nation's culture. The most dominant marker in British culture is often thought to be social class, which is not specifically linked to income and occupation as it might be in America. Instead we see social class in cultural expressions, such as the food people eat, the clothes they wear (watch out for red trousers and boat shoes!) and the way they speak. Sport is divided along these class lines. Royal Ascot is most definitely considered to be on the 'upper class' side of the equation which, quite apart from the rest of the festivities, makes it well worth the visit. A strict class system is enforced through the different 'enclosures'.

Events: 27 June - 29 July

Brighton Day Trip

Pop Culture, Underground, Tribes

According to Doctor Johnson, Brighton is ‘the perfect place to regain one’s health and then to ruin it again.’ This unique city by the sea offers fantastic shopping, sightseeing and the Brighton Pavilion – a sprawling, Arabesque palace that was a favourite of King George IV.

Spend the morning at the famous Pavilion before enjoying free time to explore in the afternoon. Browse the quirky independent shops in the North Laines or enjoy Fish 'n Chips on pier. It wouldn't be summer without at least one trip to the seaside and Brighton is the best of the bunch.

Harry Potter Studio Tour

Pop Culture

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides an amazing new opportunity to explore the magic of the Harry Potter films - the most successful film series of all time. This unique walking tour takes you behind-the-scenes and showcases a huge array of costumes, props, beautiful sets and recently added - The Hogwarts Express!

Stonehenge & Bath Day Trip

Sensory, Life & Death, Tribes

Bath Royal CrescentStonehenge - A World Heritage Site, is composed of the substantial remnants of the last in a sequence of such monuments erected between circa 3000BC and 1600BC. There has always been intense debate over quite what purpose Stonehenge served and you will get the chance to form your own opinion. A huge effort and great organisation was needed to carry the stones tens, and sometimes hundreds, of miles by land and water and then to shape and raise them. Stonehenge’s orientation in relation to the rising and setting sun has always been one of its most remarkable features.

Bath - Two thousand years ago, with most of the world at their feet, the Romans recognised the unique qualities of Bath and settled here. They chose well. Set in a sheltered valley, surrounded like Rome by seven wooded hills and nourished by Britain’s only natural hot springs, it is a natural haven. An exquisite Georgian city grew from Bath’s ancient roots epitomised by Jane Austen. The Royal Crescent, The Circus, Pump Room and Pulteney Bridge are among the finest architectural treasures in the world. Indeed, the entire city has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
