Sadly no Netflix involved (yet), but it is another rather unusual British tradition! 

Although rather dramatic sounding, this uniquely British ‘festival’ is an excuse to wrap up warm, eat some toffee apples (candy apples) and watch some amazing firework displays. However, its origins remain very morbid indeed! Here’s the brief story:
A ‘rebel’, Guy Fawkes, as part of a gang, attempted to get rid of the Protestant King James I with … explosives under the Houses of Parliament. Needless to say, he got caught, horribly punished and to celebrate everyone was permitted to light bonfires - and even put a doll version of Guy on top to burn! This was the 1600s…

Don’t worry if you can’t remember this sweet story though, there is a rhyme!

‘Remember, remember the fifth of November. Gunpowder treason and Plot. I know of no reason why gunpowder and treason should ever be forgot!’

(It continues, but ironically no one remembers it)

Nowadays, rather than celebrating the foiling of a terrorist plot, you’re more likely to find drama in the choreographed firework displays, performance artists, fun fairs and sheer amount of food. Make sure to light a sparkler (safely), eat a toffee apple and drink a hot chocolate whilst ‘ooh-ing’ and ‘ahh-ing’ at the fireworks.

Check out these bonfire nights (aka Guy Fawkes nights, aka firework displays) happening around London this November:

1. Alexandra Palace. There are fireworks and LASERS, all to the soundtrack of DJ Yoda, a German beer festival, an Ice Rink and flame eaters – dramatic!

2. Victoria Park. A Free event, watch the dazzling fireworks with the backdrop of Tower Hamlets.

3. Lambeth. This year’s theme is ‘A night at the movies! Live music on the main stage and fireworks to follow!
