Once a year artists from around Australia get together to create major art works on the beach at Currumbin on the southern end of the Gold Coast. It's an amazing area with a great beginner surf spot at the mouth of the river where stand up paddle boarders and surfers can play alike. This year didn't disappoint with giant turtles, wire ants, mosaic birds and giant lawn chairs. There are workshops for adults and kids alike and music and markets on the weekends with food vans from Italy, Persia, Greece and many more.
It's a great opportunity to get to know the quieter end of the coast and climb Elephant rock to see the views both to the north and south. There's something for everyone to enjoy at Swell - a word to the wise - it comes alive at night with glowing lights and sparkles. The final weekend even features a huge candle lit instillation which anyone can get involved in. It's a great way to get in touch with the people in the community and meet some locals.
