Fascinating study abroad outside and inside the classroom

This program will challenge you to step out of your comfort zone and experience the full mosaic of Greek culture.  Become an active participant in the Greek community and learn about this complex country through experience - from its prominent international position at the forefront of global issues such as migration and economic change, to its rich cultural and historic contributions to society.

Experience life as a Greek - new perspectives, cultural insight, community life, the realities of migration, local and global economic debate and of course, survival Greek language. You’ll enjoy mixing academic learning with experiential learning in the streets and neighborhoods of Athens. You can even gain work experience during your time abroad by adding an Internship to your program. See examples of placement options here

You'll select one Cornerstone Course out of two options:

  • The Greek Key: Combine 5 weeks of Greek language learning with faculty walks of Athenian neighborhoods that utilize the city as your classroom, studying both the visible and invisible culture of Athens.
  • Work in Thought & Action - Cornerstone Course for Internship Students: Work at an Internship Placement for 6-8 hours per week, enjoy seminars to discuss and reflect on work experiences and complete an academic term project based on independent research and workplace experience.

You are free to choose your additional courses from our varied liberal arts offerings such as art history, modern political economy, journalism, literature and history.

  • Arcadia in Greece has many courses which include the study of topical connections with other Southern European countries, such as Europe's Crises: Southern Trajectories and EU Contested Futures, which involves collaborations and visits with students in Rome and Athens and possibly other centers.
  • Students interested in Classics often pursue archaeology, philosophy, and Ancient Greek course options.
  • All courses, with the exception of the Greek language courses, are taught in English.

We also offer many local volunteering and service learning opportunities if you'd like to get practically involved with the local community.

Class encourages me to reflect on my often difficult but always rewarding experience at Caritas. The research portion pushes me to scrutinize the reality of the refugee situation in Greece. This academic understanding enriches my hands-on experience immeasurably. ”
