A unique exploration of Spanish Language and Chilean Culture

This program gives you a unique opportunity to spend your summer studying in Latin America, open to beginner, intermediate and advanced Spanish speakers. Two summer sessions are available and you will have the option to attend one or both.

Taught through our academic partner, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV), lectures and class time are supplemented and enriched by excursions and site visits to relevant institutions, towns and neighborhoods where Chile's development trajectory can be evidenced first hand. Alongside other U.S. and international students, you’ll get to know the beautiful streets of Valparaíso, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and meet the people of this vibrant and artistic country. Summer 2020 students will be located in Viña del Mar, a coastal resort town with a relaxed vibe, taking classes in a PUCV  International Student Exchange Program facility.

  • Exciting and meaningful opportunities for community engagement, travel and excursions in Chile are arranged by the PUCV international office each semester.
    • Community engagement includes working with organizations such as Minga, a community-based organization founded by a PUCV alum.
    • Excursions may include Valparaíso en Colores, a Street Art tour of PUCV’s home city, in addition to visits to Casablanca, Isla Negra and Santiago.
  • Homestay with local families is a highlight of the experience and helps you gain cultural and language immersion during your time in Chile. You live with families in Valparaíso or the nearby resort town of Vina del mar.

  • Advanced Spanish speakers might consider participating in an Internship through a PUCV placement such as Chrysalis, a capital fund supporting startups in Latin America.

  • Chile has distinctive regions and micro-climates, from the Atacama desert in the north to Patagonia and the Bio Bio valley in the south - you can explore these areas through independent or partner university organized travel.

  • PUCV has a central campus in downtown Valparaíso, only a few blocks from the Chilean Congress, the brand new Metro and the Pacific Ocean.
