Hiking the Routeburn

Airi S. Dunedin, New Zealand

During my stay in Queenstown with the Arcadia Program, Jane took us to do this amazing hike called the Routeburn Track.

It was honestly one of the most beautiful hikes I have ever done. Living in Hawaii, I definitely do get to hike some pretty awesome trails with gorgeous views of the ocean and of the mountains, but New Zealand has its own unique beauty. There’s nowhere like it in the world, and it has been one of the highlights of my trip!

That being said, not everyone may want to participate in this hike. The portion of the trail that we hiked took about 8 hours total for the return trip, and a great deal of the track was uphill. Some members of our program opted out of the trip because they were concerned about their physical stamina. However, I definitely encourage everyone to take part in this trip. It’s worth every step up steep hills and rocks, and there’s always usually a slow-, medium-, and fast-paced group.

At the end of the day, every moment of the hike was breathtaking. I really can’t describe it well enough to give it justice. I honestly felt as though I was prancing through the Shire, and I could have lived up there forever if I didn’t have to attend Uni.

My recommendation is that you don’t waste any more time and get on down to New Zealand. See it for yourself!
