Learn first-hand about the fascinating history and politics of South Africa

This is your chance to delve into the epic history of this fascinating country from apartheid through to the first free election in 1994. This study abroad program consists of lectures, group discussions, and field excursions and is taught by expert faculty from Stellenbosch University and top universities around the world, adding a unique international flavor to discussions.

Stellenbosch University, located among the Boland Mountains in the winelands of the Western Cape and just 45 minutes from Cape Town, has over 22,000 students from more than 200 different countries. An array of languages are spoken on campus – some you will recognize and many you will not. Besides English, Dutch, Mandarin, and French, you will also hear Xhosa, Ndebele, and Afrikaans.

  • You’ll study module 1: Introduction to South Africa’s Political History, and then you’ll choose two modules from a choice of seven electives with topics ranging from bio-diversity, democracy or HIV/AIDS epidemic studies, to South African art, literature, legal and social systems.

  • Once the coursework concludes, students may choose to participate in a six-day/five-night road safari along South Africa's Garden Route. This optional excursion is offered by the International Office at Stellenbosch University.
