Founded in 1943, the Students' Health and Welfare Centres Organisation (SHAWCO) is a student-run non-governmental organization based at the University of Cape Town. It seeks to improve the quality of life for individuals in developing communities within the Cape Metropolitan area, through health, education and social entrepreneurship initiatives.
SHAWCO’s mission: To Practice and promote responsible citizenship in the South African context through health, education and social entrepreneurship initiatives. SHAWCO aims to create a supportive space for experiential learning and teaching, addressing inequality through innovative and sustainable approaches to community engagement.
Arcadia works with SHAWCO to create effective, practical and thoughtful programs in South Africa, where students contribute to the local communities in the areas of health, education and social welfare.
