Top university tucked on the northwest coast of England

Lancaster University has an excellent academic reputation, a 360-acre campus of gorgeous parkland, and is ranked in the global top 1 percent of universities. The Guardian League Table 2015 ranks Lancaster 10th in the U.K., confirming its place as a top level institution. The Table ranks universities on a number of measures including the percentage of graduates who find graduate-level jobs, teaching quality, student satisfaction and spend per student.

Its strengths include STEM subjects, environmental science, English and creative writing, education, and social sciences; the Management School is triple accredited and is ranked in the world’s top 100 business schools. You’ll study alongside full-time students at the university and be fully integrated into courses and college life. Lancaster is safe, compact, and beautiful—if you want to study abroad in England, away from the big cities, this is a wonderful program option!

  • The International Summer Program is a fall pre-session available to study abroad students at a supplemental cost. You’ll study British Culture, Language, and Society, 1800-present—this is a great way to learn about the history of the UK before you dive into your semester abroad.

  • You’ll benefit from Lancaster’s collegiate system—each student is assigned a specific college on campus, each of which has its own distinct character, with a strong sense of community among the colleges.

  • You’ll make friends easily through the Students’ Union, home to over 200 diverse societies and sports clubs, from baking to sky diving to Harry Potter.

  • Situated in the countryside, just three miles from the small but buzzing city of Lancaster, you’ll experience the striking northwest coast of England along Morecambe Bay. Dominated by the vista of a 900-year old castle, Lancaster is home to an outdoor market, small boutiques, high street outlets, and a number of annual festivals. You’ll also have edgy Manchester to the south and the majestic Lake District to the north.

  • Chancellor and Britain's best known mountaineer, Sir Chris Bonington, led a charity abseil down the side of Bowland Tower as part of the University's 50th anniversary celebrations, raising money for four local charities.

I was interested in studying my favorite writers in their home country. I grew stronger and thrived in the independent style system. ”
