Spring Events for Far North Queensland Students

We have some excellent co-curricular activities planned for the Spring semester! Take a look at what's on offer within your program and other regions.

GET PSYCHED TO BIKE!

THEME: ACTIVE AUSTRALIA, LOCAL AUSTRALIA

Hire a bike and spend an afternoon getting to know your local area - the Ross River - by pedal power. A favourite area of the locals at sunset and the best way to work off that Tim Tam addiction! Gizmo will show you the best spots to hang out, feed turtles, play volleyball or chill by the pool. Not to be missed! This event is free if you have your own bike (I would recommend getting one for your semester in Townsville)

BREAKFAST EXTRAVAGANZA - TOWNSVILLE CITY

THEME: LOCAL AUSTRALIA, MULTI-CULTURAL AUSTRALIA

FREE Welcome Breakfast at Odyssey – easily the best place to get breakie anywhere in Townsville with omelettes as big as your head and fluffy delicious pancakes which melt in your mouth – did I mention the fresh fruit smoothies too? Walking tour of the Strand and the local art gallery. afterwards with your local guide, Gizmo, followed by a wander through the local Cotters Markets to find unique tropical fruits, stuffed cane toads, and crocodile belts.

SAILING ON THE BAY

THEME: ACTIVE AUSTRALIA, LOCAL AUSTRALIA, AUSTRALIAN LANDSCAPES

Come and learn to sail with a local crew and get to know some Townsville Aussies – this is run by Townsville Yacht club. Arcadia can’t guarantee you’ll get on a boat but usually there is plenty of space. It’s truly a magical evening watching the sunset from the boat and learning how to navigate the waters of Magnetic Island Bay. Bucket list TICK!

HIKE CASTLE HILL

THEME: ACTIVE AUSTRALIA, SPIRITUAL AUSTRALIA, LOCAL AUSTRALIA, AUSTRALIAN LANDSCAPES

If you haven’t yet heard about it – every local in Townsville’s done the goat track or the Cudtheringa track up Castle Hill – it’s one not to be missed! It even got 3 Puff’s out of 5 on the puffometer (this is a real term according to “thegoTownsville”. Join Gizmo on an afternoon hike on one or two of the 15 different tracks up this iconic rock and visit the local watering hole afterwards for the best gelato in Townsville – Juliettes: it’s practically an institution!

KAYAK THE ROSS RIVER

THEME: ACTIVE AUSTRALIA, LOCAL AUSTRALIA, AUSTRALIAN LANDSCAPES

Stunningly beautiful Ross River Kayak tour at sunset with a local guide with plenty of knowledge of the local flora and fauna. This one was a real highlight last semester and we floated happily among giant lotus fields which looked like a scene from Alice in Wonderland!

WULGURUKABA PLANT TRAIL, PICNIC AND WATERFALLS

THEME: ACTIVE AUSTRALIA, SPIRITUAL AUSTRALIA, INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIA, LOCAL AUSTRALIA, AUSTRALIAN LANDSCAPES, MULTI-CULTURAL AUSTRALIA

Bus trip to explore the northern beaches and learn about the native trees and plants used by the aboriginal people through the Wulgurukaba plant trail. Then we’ll head off to picnic at a crystal clear river with a beautiful waterfall and play on the rock slides.

WHITSUNDAYS SAIL, KAYAK, HIKE

ACTIVE AUSTRALIA, SPIRITUAL AUSTRALIA, AUSTRALIAN LANDSCAPES

Discover the fabulous areas South of Townsville. We will visit Horseshoe bay in Bowen, the big Mango, Cedar Creek falls, amazing hikes, full day sailing trip out to Whitehaven beach for snorkeling and then kayak around the south islands. This is your free excursion weekend so keep an eye out to put the dates in your calendar!

FINAL NIGHT DINNER

Celebrate with a FREE group dinner on Townsville’s “eat” street – Palmer’s Street. We’ll share stories from the semester, decide who ate the most Tim Tams and who spent the most time getting Juliettes and eating it in the group study rooms of the library.
